Arnon Lapid, commentator for a kibbutz newspaper, on his tour of the Shomron: “The conclusion, which was becoming clearer and clearer (even to the point of frustration) the more we traveled and probed the vastness of the Shomron – Evacuation is no longer a solution”.
Arnon Lapid, a senior commentator for the kibbutz weekly Kibbutz News, was taken for a tour of the Shomron in the framework of the tour project sponsored by the Shomron Regional Council and the Shomron Residents Council.
Lapid, a leading columnist from the kibbutz movement, was invited to the Shomron as a guest of the head of the Shomron Regional Council, Gershon Mesika, and toured the Shomron under the guidance of Boaz Haetzni, of the Council’s Strategy Unit.
Lapid wrote about his powerful impressions, doubts and frustration stemming from what he saw with his own eyes about the possibility of uprooting settlements, in his article in the kibbutz newspaper.
After writing extensively about the scenery, the security observation points from which one can see to the center of the country, the visit to the historic and heritage sites and his meetings with Shomron personalities, headed by the Chairman of the Shomron Residents Council, Benny Katzover, Arnon Lapid summed up his conclusion:
“The conclusion, which was becoming clearer and clearer (even to the point of frustration) the more we traveled and probed the vastness of the Shomron: Evacuation is no longer a solution! A region of the country, and I mean only the Shomron, which has a population of 85,000 young Jews (55% of them secular), half of them children and youth under 18 and only 2% over 65, which has been growing at a steady rate of between 4-10% annually, operating 300 educational institutions – such a region of this land cannot be evacuated.”
